PALM PIOLET : I would not know of any adhisive you can buy from a utility store thatwould work. The other alternative is just to contact the manufactureand ask them. If they won't tell you, then pay them the few dollarsto replace the cable. You would have to have them sell yoiu oneanyways...======================================== ===Email: Home Page: Components: Instruments Products: Navigation: Personal: I have a Palm Pilot that works but the screen is dead. I've found theproblem and it can be fixed, but it looks like it requiresneurosurgery!=-)On the display board there are two micro ribbon cables: one for touchscreen data and one for display data. The display data cable iscompletely detached from the board! (I have no idea how this happened)The cable is fine and the contacts are still exposed and the board isclean and it's contacts are exposed. When I press the two together inproper alignment I get the image back. PALM PIOLET : The question: How can the two be soldered back together/ held togethersecurely? All I'm used to soldering is regular components, nothingthissmall!(PS. if more info is needed I can email a pic of the situation uponrequest.)Thanks, I wish I could remove the ribbon and replace it wih a new one butthe other end is directly attached to the display, ie no connectors andnot soldered. I'm stuck with either a new unit or fixing this blastedthing. Thanks you though for letting me know about the adhesive part. Many of them carry at least a 90 day warranty. If you have not been intothe set and it is less than 90 days old, or really close to it, take yourreceipt, the boxes, and the palm pilot into the store and have it exchanged fora new, functional one. The same should apply if you have an extended warrantyon the product. If that doesn't work, contact the manufacturer and ask them in customerservice about your problem. give them the specific model and serial number ofthe device. If you emphasize your needs to the manufacturer, they will be moreempathetic to the customer than to a technician! PALM PIOLET : A friend of mine tried to get Palm to repair an older model III thathad been dropped and they quoted him $100.The problem with this Palm was that the display connector was brokenon the CPU board; I replaced the part--a Hirose 20-pin flex ZIFsocket you can get from DigiKey--but have been unable to get the Palmconsistently working (display's fine, touch isn't), though I can getit working with *lots* of pressure.I now believe my problem is due to delamination of the display cableas it enters the CPU connector. Since bare flex cable isn'tmechanically fit for even a ZIF connection, the connector end isadhesive bonded to a piece of thin plastic that has the contacts thatgo in the ZIF.David Moisan, N1KGH, GROL Invisible Disability: GE Superradio FAQ: Sangean ATS-909 FAQ: perhaps, you might try modifying the unit to have a qucik disconnect typeribbon cable with disconnects rather than a laminent. This may help in thefuture when attempting to service such a device. PALM PIOLET : Assuming I can find one. I considered myself really lucky to find theHirose part since small connectors like that are always invariably OEMand thus unavailable. Other stupid tricks I have done in the past with similar connectorsinclude shimming the connector with plastic to increase contactpressure (for a while, anyway). I'd *like* to just find out whereit's delaminated and fix it.David Moisan, N1KGH, GROL Invisible Disability: GE Superradio FAQ: Sangean ATS-909 FAQ: My advice: tape, glue and a conductive ink pen. DO NOT try to solderit. I would get a conductive-ink pen and some good quality tape, glueif needed. Put the tape across to hold things together and carefullydraw the traces with the pen. I hate to sound discouraging, but I tried to fix a ribbon cable likethis inside a motorola alpha pager (after a toddler hurled the pagerabout 8 feet onto a concrete driveway)while I consider myself a very good solderer, two things happened: PALM PIOLET : Resume # : 51134 Header : Lotus Notes Developer Date : June 24 1999 Name : Anil Antony Address : 4 Brookside Road West Orange, New Jersey 07052 Country : USA Phone # : 973-736-2400 Fax # : 973-731-3192 Email : Resume SPECTRUMVoice (973)-736-2400, Fax (973) 731-3192email: * Around three years of experience in Analysis, Design, Development, Testing, Debugging and Implementing business applications in the user segment of I.T Industry.* Excellent skills in Lotus Notes, Lotus Domino, H.T.M.L, Java script, Net Object Fusion, Lotus Notes Palm Piolet Integration and graphic designing tool PaintShopPro.* Worked in Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows 95 based environments.* Worked in different projects in areas of Notes Workflow Applications, Domino Electronic Commerce Applications, Domino WebSites, Domino based secured applications.* Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering, Calicut University, Calicut, India, 1993* Certified Lotus Notes Professional (CLP), Lotus Corporation, 1998, (Certification # sp1-98-0750)Lotus Notes 4.x, Lotus Notes 5 Beta, Domino, Net Object Fusion, Java Script, HTML, Lotus Notes & Palm Pilot.
