EXPERIMENTAL BITTORRENT : One other thing: the Experimental Bittorrent client and another program called TorrentSpy will both tell you how many seeds are available without having to go back to the tracker.what could an ISP be doing to limit speeds on bittorent.. could theythrottle certain ports, or limit various TCP transfers?would there be ways to get around it?btopenworld used to in the UK but stopped after widespread complaint.--Garethquote of the day'nostradamus? -sounds like a rock group to me!'see my ebay auctions aPoke a hole in your firewall for at least port 6881. I was having the sameproblem - I had very slow download speed (0-3kB/s) and upload speed between8-10kB/s. I killed the XP firewall and all of a sudden my speed picked up,the number of peers I could see increased and the total distributed copiesjumped 10 fold. So I installed a real firewall and left a few ports open andit all works great now.Hmm. I'd think if there was a firewall on the system, you'd not be able to get any uploads going at all. Interesting... EXPERIMENTAL BITTORRENT : I'm not predjudiced, nor am I perfect; but my dog is, and -he- guards my home.I found the RPM for the 5.8.7 somewhere before but lost it when Ireinstalled. I already have that one.I've got 5.8.7 working but I need to see where they put things in 5.8.7 sothat all my links/icons/menus work OK.If you installed from rpm then kpackage should show the links.I installed from the tarball...it isn't like most; it is a generic thingthat just has the files...you have to figure out where they go.I needed the Mandrake RPM so I could figure out which dirs that the fileswent into. The 5.8.7 RPM I found before gave me a right mouse click option; I can'tget that yet...but I finally have everything else.Java Bittorrent client Haven't tried all these links so hopefully they are still good.so open the tarball in ark and see what the paths are. Or look in standardplaces like /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/BitTorr ent, /usr/bin,/usr/share; or possibly /usr/local/whatever; or use find, or locate. EXPERIMENTAL BITTORRENT : There is a lot of complaining about BT going on on AOLM, in fact I had abit of a moan about it myself when my ISP's transparent proxy was stoppingit working for me.However, I recall when 9.1 came out. I had to wait until about a weekafter it's release for the load on the FTP servers to reduce to a pointwhere I could reliably download it. Using BT, I've got all 3 CD ISOssitting on my hard drive two days after release. Not only that, but when9.2 is released on the FTP servers, I am going to be one of the manypeople _not_ clogging them up, making it easier for everyone else. There may be problems with BT, particularly ones relating to ease of useand setup (throttling upload speeds, transparent proxys), but in generalprinciple, surely it must count as a good way of initially releasing ISOsof popular distributions?Naich.-- ..... Lots of fairly blurry pics. .... Improving our new dump. . Time for some nice food. ........... Right. I've had enough.Motto: To err is human, to moo, bovine. EXPERIMENTAL BITTORRENT : I agree. Also, the monthly bandwidth is not free for webmasters so this saves them money too.So:1) When you finish downloading files with BT you know that they are perfect (cuz it has automatic checksum)2) The distributor saves a load of bandwidth (and money)3) The users get the ISOs much before than downloading them from a crowded serverNaich wrote in news:Pine.SOL.4.58.0310171424480.4880@ca dsa.ra.phy.cam.ac.uk:IMO its good but not ready for consumption by Joe Public yet.Download rate can initially be slow and so people get frustrated. It hogs all upload bandwidth by default often to the detriment of download speed.Sometimes upload speed exceeds download. Being mildly selfish I dont like when I see that happening!BT is a server and people need to open ports and should really run it under a secure environment IMO.Simultaneous torrents need additional traffic shaping/managementIf the torrent is IP locked the there are issues with transparent proxies. EXPERIMENTAL BITTORRENT : Most of these things will probably be ironed out in time as people startdeveloping enhanced BT agentsThere are already many BT clients, here are a few links:Official SiteJava Bittorrent client Haven't tried all these links so hopefully they are still good.]> There is a lot of complaining about BT going on on AOLM, in fact I had a]> bit of a moan about it myself when my ISP's transparent proxy was stopping]> it working for me.]> ]> However, I recall when 9.1 came out.
