BITTORRENT SITE : When a Client wants a file belonging to the Server, usuallythe Client will open an FTP session[2] with the Server, requestthe file, and receive it in the form of a string of packets (which are all about the same size) which the Client's FTP software will reassemble into a copy of the file. Let's say it takes M packets to send that file.If N Clients want that file, and they all use FTP to download it,then the Server has to send M packets to each Client, for a totalof N*M packets.BitTorrent, on the other hand, does this: having compiled a listof the N Clients, it breaks the file into M packets as usual, but then distributes the packets among the Clients, sort of like a dealer dealing cards to card players. It also sends to each Clienta list of the Clients and which packets each Client got. This listis also a file, so it gets divided into packets when sent; lets say this list is K packets in size.

BITTORRENT SITE : When all Clients have their copies of the list and their share ofpackets, the Server tells the Clients, "Okay, trade packets amongyourselves until everybody has the complete file."What's the advantage in this? Consider what the Server's ISP seeswhen it handles traffic for the Server. With FTP, the ISP seesthe server send N*M packets; with BitTorrent, the ISP sees the Server send M + N*K packets. Usually K tends to be much, much less than M, so that M + N*K ismuch less than N*M. If the ISP imposes a hard limit on how much data the Server can send per day, BitTorrent makes it possible tosend the file to more Clients per day than with FTP. If the ISPcharges for every packet sent or received, BitTorrent is cheaperfor the Server than FTP.Remember now, this is just a _guess_ of how BitTorrent works, and why the Server might choose to use it. And I haven't even got intowhat the costs are to the Clients, or how the BitTorrent sessionmight be optimized to take into account the different connectivityspeeds of the Clients. [1] I'm using the terms "Server" and "Client" rather loosely here; I know there are specific, technical definitions for these terms, but don't assume them here.

BITTORRENT SITE : [2] FTP = File Transfer Protocol. Google on that to learn more.On Tue, 4 Feb 2003 17:54:05 -0600, "D-Chance." wrote:If you already have the file, and try to downloadon top of it, it will upload instead; that is the onlyway to upload with Bit Torrent. When you close the window, it will stop uploadingafter it finishes the current data packet (which can take a minute). So if I have a file to share (upload), I haveto try downloading it? The site hosting theexchange, then, has to have it availablethemselves? If so, then I can request adownload, which will cause me to uploadto others instead? For example, Ishin has some Getbackersand Asagiri titles. If I have a HeatGuy J(just as an example) episode, it won't bepicked up by others... only the Getbackerand Asagiri episodes? On Tue, 4 Feb 2003 19:35:51 -0600, "D-Chance." wrote:Correct; someone has to be running a trackerto seed the Torrent.I'm thinking that it would be cool if the 'finished downloading'BitTorrent dialog box could include a 'Send me the tracker'button.

BITTORRENT SITE : you upload whatever you're downloading. so, as you were getting asagiri no miko, you were uploading parts of asagiri no miko as well. bittorrent isn't sending/recieving anything else except that file.bittorrent only temporarily needs whatever folder yer dl'ing into.it's a nice program because you don't have to deal with the ircif you want the newest stuff, no queues, start/stop anytime you want, pretty nice speeds, best of all...no more leech referencesbecause you're serving.Download just finished, but there's still some uploadinggoing on. Ishin did request on their site to leave thewindow open for a while, if possible, after finishing soothers can still download from me (no problem, if it's away I can help distibute in some small way without tyingmy PC up forever and ever).Hey, I'm King Leech~! The joys of a free andopen internet! ;)But the program does limit you to only thosetitles being offered by a fansubber? Is therea way to share titles via BitTorrent withoutgoing through a fansub website (say, I wantto find a title that a fansub group doesn't havelisted)?

BITTORRENT SITE : Dear lost EE viewers,I have downloaded quite a few episodes of EE starting at where BBCAleft off and have watched them. I am now sending them on to a fewpeople that have shown interest and i would be happy to add anyonethat asks to the list. Lets face it, not all of us have the means todownload and burn them so feel free to drop me a line and you will beadded to the list. I hope that tis helps a few people.I think I have the equipment but not the technical skill to convert thedownloaded files to DVD format for viewing on a TV.I'm downloading through Ian and Tim's site using Bittorrent, then copyingthe file to CD on my burner, but my DVD player isn't recognizing the disks. Thanks for any help. I'll be happy to burn and send DVDs once I get allthis figured out. What you need is a program like NERO that will transform the filesfrom mpg into VCD format and then any dvd player that plays VCD willplay it.
