BITTORRENT MUSIC : Yeah it always pays to be abit paranoid but if you setup and secure your PCright you can breath a little easier ;)As for some people saying P2P is mostly "illegal" stuff well yeah alot of itis but that don't mean you have to download the illegal stuff! ;) Its likemaking cars that go over the speed limit ,your not allowed to go over butyou have the means to and some of us do! Really it comes down to the person, some just like to cruise along at a slow safe pace just as some like to useP2P for legal stuff. Its sad when all P2P users get tainted as bad users :)i have no moral qualms about sharing "illegal" content....i would gladly pay (albiet a small amount) for a good online service, mostusers will. when they start introducing bargain basement priced value addedmusic services the free p2p services will find it hard to compete and thereneed will diminish...

BITTORRENT MUSIC : Of course they do.....im sure i can sleep alot better at night now knowingyou the 'software crusader' is out there ridding the universe of these badbad people ;)But if you have helped to bust so many and you state there is way of totallycrushing them then something is wrong with your service as a networkengineer or the company you work for because from your statement yourobviusly not doing your job you claim you can!Last time i looked P2P was just as popular if not more than ever and growingsteadily and it does not look like they have been crushed at all ,weatheryour for or against it software piracy can never be 'totally'stopped.Besides some companys use P2P in everyday work but i guess they mustbe pirates to .....arrhhh me heartys!Someone let smithy at loose on an internetconnection and the result was:Hmmm, and do you confirm their claims? The "software police" are oftenprivate organisations sending letters with various legal threats. Do youjust accept the content of the letter you receive or do you attempt toconfirm it? If I was your customer and was sharing a file called, forexample, "big block buster movie.mpg" and you got a letter stating that Iwas sharing copyright material would you automatically believe them? Whatif "big block buster movie.mpg" was actually my review of that movie? Fromwhat I've seen so far, few of these "software police" actually download thecontent to confirm what it is. A google of "Media Force letter" will showquite a few examples of pretty much exactly this scenario.

BITTORRENT MUSIC : A thread to discuss a FAQ for alt.binaries.torrents, Here's a simple FAQ I just tossed together. Suggestions?(Info for User)=================================== =================BitTorrent is a protocol designed for transferring files. It is peer-to-peer in nature, as users connect to each other directlyto send and receive portions of the file. However, there is a central server (called a tracker) which coordinates the action of all such peers.Shad0w's experimental client: burst!: Official client: Frost's Experimental client: Small metadata file which the BitTorrent program Opensto get file.A server on the Internet that acts to coordinate the action of BitTorrent clients.======================================== ============File info==================================== ================Include if possible link to site with info on post.Tagging:Optionally, some idea of the source for certain classifications.#CAM#, #DVD-RIP#, #VHS-CAP#, etc. for movies... #PUBLISHED#,#SCANNED#, etc. for e-books... and so on.Also, e-books have their own set of naming standards that, among otherthings, indicate format (html, txt, lit, etc.) and, if they arescanned, version numbers showing how well proofed they are. I think apointer to the a.b.e-books FAQ is in order for that info: it'scurrently at

BITTORRENT MUSIC : One question that I'm sure is going to come up a bit is "How do I usethese torrents?" (Save them someplace, double-click and let Windowshandle it from there. Or associate them with your client in yournewsreader's configuration and just launch them -- can do this inAgent, not sure about others.)Recently, I tried to get an html document from SuprNova that was namedwrong, *.html.torrent. Clicking on it opened the torrent file in mybrowser. I copied it to my desktop, renamed it to *_html.torrent andTHEN double-clicked. Maybe an attachment naming rule explaining thisoddity so it can be avoided.Maybe the most frequently asked trouble-shooting questions in theofficial bit-torrent FAQ should be duplicated in the a.b.torrents FAQ,just to save people some jumping around... for instance, the mostlikely reason people can't connect to a tracker (blocked ports). There will be some people who will stumble into the bit-torrentuniverse for the first time through the news-group. An awareness ofthis fact while writing the FAQ will help smooth their experience.

BITTORRENT MUSIC : Here's a pointer to the most helpful multi-media FAQ out there (IMHO),that I think should be included: thealt.binaries.multimedia.erotica FAQ! ;-)I implemented most of your suggestions, on the most common BT errorsI was looking to just put the "Five Most Common Errors" any idea what those are? Also are there any more suggestions for the FAQ?======================================== ======================={Basic FAQ for alt.binaries.torrents}the FAQ shold say don't just download the rar and par files and then torrentit.Firstly PAR files have no use as BT does hash checking, secondly wrappingin RARwill not reduce the size and more seriously means people unRAR toavi/bin/iso whateverand delete the RAR's, meaning they cannot seed or upload to anyone unlessthey keep both the compressedand uncompressed versions so exactly double the space.bittorrent should only include the finished product, no rar, zip, gz etc.Movies , Tv shows, gamesand music currently being torrented will NOT benefit from compressionalgorithms and will NOTbenefit from parity files.
