BITTORRENT FILE : You may have problems if you are running a firewall since it usesnon-standard ports for the connections.I use the "Burst!" client since it allows better control(), and download the MPEG files that areof the format stargate.sg-1.s07eXX.title.[BT].torrent which are goodquality and don't seem to suffer from too many lip-sync problems.I forgot to add that it may appear that nothing is happening when you startthe bittorrent file, in fact what is actually happening is that it iscreating a file on your harddisc that is the same size of the one you aredownloading. This allows the parts to be downloaded in any order and putinto the correct place in the file. This confused me at first whendownloading large files as it can take quite a long time.There are two parts to the process. First you get the programme itself,which you seem to have done, and then you have to find the torrent file foreach download. These files are posted on various websites or binarynewsgroups and are very small, from say 9k to 80k, give or take. When youget the torrent file, you click on it, a window comes up asking you whereyou want the file saved and then the BT programme itself opens and does itsthing. You can close it any time you want and resume the download later(again, you click on the torrent file etc...). It sounds great in theory.In practice, I find the speeds low (and I am on a 600k cable modem), theclient tends to crash (although this might be at my end) and like I said,the files I got were useless because they were unwatchable. Also, the filesare far too large for my needs, all I want is 100 MB maximum but thesmallest SG files I found are over 400 MB. BITTORRENT FILE : Anyway, don't be put off by my experience and give it a try, it might workfor you. it is fluctuating as other people join/leave the stream. the software isattempting to find the best download source for the file from people who areactively serving the 'chunks' that you require.For example, if I am downloading a file from a source at 11kb/s but Ialready have 90% completed and your computer can connect to mine at 60kb/syou will download the first 90% at 60kb/s but then have to wait to find theother 10% either in 'chunks' from me at 60kb/s or from another source atanother rate (possibly even my source at 11kb/s).As an very simply overview, that's how BT works ... and why the numbers areall over the place.One of the reasons it is important to keep your BitTollerant connection openlonger than it takes to download the file is so other people can downloadthe file chunks from your connection after you've completed your download. Itend to leave mine open while I watch the show, which gives the 'stream' anextra hour or two (depending on when I watch it) of my bandwidth. For the record cable is available in metropolitan areas, satellite,ADSL and ISDN pretty much everywhere else with some restrictions.I'm using ADSL but still choose to download 30 to 60Mb eps as in thelong run I'll have them on DVD.i am from nz and have lived in aus, as far as i know most so calledbroadband offerings (most are well below 1mbit/s) have monthly data caps.sure there might be some who prefer small episodes but i think most preferthe high quality ones if they can get them. at least in my experienceanyway..Why would you think it would be any different when the two major playersTelstra and Optus are in NZ and Australia.I'd hardly call cable "so called" and ADSL is 1.5mbit/sec with many unlimitedplans available. Let's say it takes M packets to send that file.If N Clients want that file, and they all use FTP to download it,then the Server has to send M packets to each Client, for a totalof N*M packets.BitTorrent, on the other hand, does this: having compiled a listof the N Clients, it breaks the file into M packets as usual, but then distributes the packets among the Clients, sort of like a dealer dealing cards to card players. It also sends to each Clienta list of the Clients and which packets each Client got. This listis also a file, so it gets divided into packets when sent; lets say this list is K packets in size.
