BITTORRENT DOWNLOAD : I use Guarddog - made rules for bittorrent but is it a TCP or UDP protocol?TCP - from what I've read. I've tried TCP and UDP, allowed the ports to be used,but the transfer ends up losing the connection after slowing to 1 KB. Ifinally shut down the firewall and it's been working, yet I amuncomfortable with this.I ran this command from terminal :btdownloadcurses.py --max_upload_rate 10 --responsefile/home/myusername/mytorrent -XXXXXX.torrent.That helped with the 2:1 upload | download ratio. Whatshould I be doing instead to keep the firewall up and with allow-onlyprotocols?I probably should have said 'port forwarding'. I have a LinkSys routerbetween my computers and the DSL modem. So the IP address that theinternet sees in the IP assigned to the router by the DSL provider. I runa webserver behind the router. So port 80 must be 'forwarded' or'translated' (NAT) from the IP of the router to the internal IP of mywebserver. So, in the setup of the LinkSys router, I can set it up sothat all requests for port 80 go internal to that machine. BITTORRENT DOWNLOAD : The same is true for bittorrent. I forwarded the range (I can do thiswith this router, but couldn't with my SMC router) of 6881-6999 ports (theones used by bittorrent) to my machine. This helped immensely, along withlimiting the upload speed to '10' (--max_upload_rate 10).As for the command, I didn't use the '--responsefile' parameter before thefilename. I just navigated to the directory in a shell prompt and issuedthis command:btdownloadgui.py --max_upload_rate 10 mytorrent-mccubbin.torrentBingo, after about 3 minutes, I was up to 148 KiB/s download and 10-11KiB/s upload. The whole 3 cd's in about 5 hours. It worked great for me.Thank you. Well, it's finally done - the transfer. I'm burning the 2nd CD asI write. The transfer - not counting last nights' debacle - took about 11hours going 10k up and 20k (on average) down. Still, it was faster thanFTP.Thanks to everyone for the help. I limited the upload rate and am nowhitting speeds of between 5 Kbs to 19Kbs. I disabled the firewallaltogether but that has not improved things much. Anyway, it is a lotfaster than it was and I am expecting completion of the download around8.30 tomorrow morning. BITTORRENT DOWNLOAD : As soon as theyhave the same "chunk" of data, they will also "feed" others who need it, thus sharing the bandwidth very effectively.You can get some damn good speeds if there are more "seeds" than there are people who are still downloading it, but the data flow can vary, and will often pick up and drop off during a large download.To start a download, you are sent a small data file which will describe the file you want - the size, the length of data chunks, and CRC information to help it determine if any data is corrupt. You tell it where to download, and it will allocate the full file size immediately, then start to download data to this "hollow" file until it has it all.If possible, and going with the idea behind bittorrent, if you leave the download window open for as long as possible after you finish downloading it (I often leave them going 24 hrs or so), you will help everyone else get hold of the file by providing a feed for them.
