ANGEL BITTORRENT : What is BitTorrent?BitTorrent is a protocol designed for transferring files. It is peer-to-peerin nature, as users connect to each other directly to send and receiveportions of the file. However, there is a central server (called a tracker)which coordinates the action of all such peers. The tracker only managesconnections, it does not have any knowledge of the contents of the filesbeing distributed, and therefore a large number of users can be supportedwith relatively limited tracker bandwidth. The key philosophy of BitTorrentis that users should upload (transmit outbound) at the same time they aredownloading (receiving inbound.) In this manner, network bandwidth isutilized as efficiently as possible. It's not really muchdifferent from Kazaa, et al.. ANGEL BITTORRENT : It is an evil program if you are against copyright infringement,although not every file downloaded through it will infringecopyright. These episodes will.It is not an evil program in the sense that it will hurt yourcomputer. It is an 'open source' program. Typically a program iswritten in a human-readable form, 'source code', and compiled intoa machine-readable from for distribution, with the source coderemaining a commercial secret. It is possible for such 'closedsource' programs to include nasty little back-door functions, butan open source program is open to scrutiny and therefore much moretrustworthy.BitTorrent is the coolest. Provided you can upload, you will get a fasterand (almost) instantly available download than any other p2p client I know.No nasties hidden inside. As for copyright infringement, it is doubtfulwhether a copy of a publicly broadcast program can be said to infringe. LikeI care about this, but you might.Not to spark this whole can'o'worms again, but distributing a copy of a *copyrighted* publicly broadcast program without the copyright holder's consent will almost definitely be determined to be an infringement. No good's going to come out of that thing.)I read the article about the FCC ruling but for the life of me, I can'tfigure out how that's supposed to work. The article says it will stillallow recording to vcr's or dvd recorders but supposedly make it moredifficult to upload to the net. How? I can't imagine a digital copyprotection of some sort that would allow recording to vcr's but not allow itto be saved to a standard mpeg file. Or is every household going to haveit's own signature that could allow it to be traced to the source? Thelatter is right at _1984_ and Big Brother territory. I had been recording Dark Angel episodes off five for my brother in sussex who can not get five. But whilst recording episode 2x22 there was not enough space on the tape, and my video starts choking on tapes when it gets hot and so I was unable to put another tape in to get the rest of the ep.So I tried a bittorrent link (eyes only) found on a website at my brothers house last weekend, but it would always time out.Is it usually only current episodes that work with bittorrent ? I also have no idea how to use irc to get hold of bittorrent links. I tried an irc link in mirc, but had no idea how to request anything, the other users did not have any conversations that I could access.... and you of course then closed it without waiting for the retry, didn'tyou? Silly rabbit.
